If I were to ask you, how many Eids there are in Islam, what would the right answer be?
2, 4, Or 5?
Most of us, I’m sure would answer 4 – correct? No.
In Islam, we are extremely fortunate to have 5 Eidain!
Yes, that’s correct! We have 5 Eidain (plural of Eid).
1. Eid-ul-Fitr
2. Eid-ul-Adha
3. Eid-ul-Gadheer
4. Eid-ul-Mubahila &
5. Eid-ul-Jumu’a (which comes once every week!)
Most of us fail to realize that we have an Eid every week!
The word “eid” is an Arabic word derived from root of “a-w-d”. Literally it means a recurring event. In Islam it denotes the festivals of Islam. The word “eid” occurs in the Qura’n once meaning ‘a joyous recurring occasion’ (5:114)

“Isa the son of Maryam said: O Allah, our Lord! Send down to us food from heaven which should be to us an EID (joyous recurring occasion), to the first of us and for last of us, and a sign from You, and grant us means of subsistence, and You are the best of Providers.”
Once the day of Eid-ul-Fitr will pass, we should not think that we would have to wait another 2 months to celebrate another Eid; but we should rejoice at the fact that the day of Jumu’a (Friday) is around the corner for us to celebrate once again!
The eve and day of Friday are excellent and hold a high status of honor and blessing.
It has been reported from Imam Ali (a.s.) that Allah has granted Friday superiority over all the days of the week and made it a day of Eid; the eve of Friday is honored just like the day.
The Prophet (pbuh) has said:
“Indeed the 24 hours of the night and day of Friday belong to Allah. In every hour there are 600,000 opportunities of freedom from the fire.”
Imam Muhammad Al-Baqir (a.s.) has said:
“The sunrise of Friday is better than all the other days, and the birds too when they meet on Friday say Peace, Peace…. On this righteous day!”
On the eve of Friday, Allah sends angels from the First Heaven to magnify the blessings on the believers.
Imam Mohamed Baqir (a.s.) has said:
“As soon as the sun sets and Friday begins, Allah orders an angel to announce: Is there any mu’min servant who before the night ends, asks for safety in this world and peace in the hereafter so I may grant it to him/her? Is there any mu’min servant who turns to me in repentance so I may forgive him/her? Is there any mu’min servant who is in distress, seeks livelihood, or seeks health in illness, or freedom in captivity, or gain in times of loss…. I will grant him/her what is asked for if I am called upon tonight…”
The list of virtues of the day and eve of Friday are endless. There are several recommended a’mals (actions) to be performed on the eve and day of Friday.
